How to become a digital nomad?

Working at an office and having a fixed work routine is no longer the only way to work. Digital telecommunications technology and the ease of travel has allowed people to work while traveling all over the world.  This has given rise to the term digital nomadA digital nomad is a person whose job allows them to work remotely, while traveling to different countries that combines highly skilled work with immersive tourism in the country of preference. They have no permanent address and change their place of residence regularly.

To become a digital nomad, one must first find a job that allows one to work online and remotely.  Many companies today hire remote workers as it has many advantages for the company.  Digital nomads allow companies to save money, have access to talent worldwide, digital nomads stay with a company longer and because of their varied cultural experiences, digital nomads have developed soft skills that can benefit the company.

Three types of digital nomads have emerged over the years – the freelancer, the entrepreneur and the employee.

The freelance nomad is a self-employed person who sells a service that can be carried out online.  These are usually as advisors or teachers, consultants or coaches. The most popular are the language teacher and teachers of various skills like painting.  Other jobs for the freelance digital nomads are web designer, professional photographer, copy writer and web copywriter, web translator, graphic designer, video creators and blogger.

The digital entrepreneur sells a non-physical product or digital product that can be distributed over the internet at a minimum cost like for example an e-book, audiobook, online course, mobile app, or template.

Many companies are looking for employees who will meet objectives rather than fill up office space.  For the digital nomad who would like the security of a monthly salary, then working for a company who has embraced a different concept of work and accepted this work and life alternative is for you. Online advertising or marketing, SEO or search engine optimization specialist, social media marketer, affiliate marketer, customer support representative, technical support representative are just some of the many jobs a company may have for a digital nomad.
